Rally for the Cure proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016. We created our “Why I Rally” series to celebrate and honor our Ambassadors who’ve supported our program over the years. “Why I Rally” allows our Ambassadors and participants to tell their story, and share their commitment and dedication in helping put an end to breast cancer. Each and every one of you makes a difference!

Why I Rally

“For years I was distressed that women’s health issues were basically ignored. All research grants from the federal government were for men’s issues. For instance, heart studies were done only on men, not women, etc.

When I moved to Hammock Dunes in 2000, they were planning a Rally for the Cure event. I was excited to participate, partly because so many people I knew, including my mother who had breast cancer twice, were affected by this disease and also because my profession was fundraising. The majority of the work I did was for a women’s organization which supported Brandeis University. So I had spent a lot of time raising money from women. Rally for the Cure was a perfect fit now that I was retired.

I LOVE the fact that Rally for the Cure’s mission, in addition to raising research funds is to make women aware of the things they should do to prevent breast cancer and to discover it early enough to be treated, so they will survive.

I actually had breast cancer, once in each breast, in 2006 and 2009, but am doing fine because it was discovered early.

At Hammock Dunes, all of the sports and different groups support the Rally. We have 7 Rally events now. It began with golf, but we have added bridge, tennis, bocce, croquet, mahjong and now pickleball for next year..plus a Men’s Valentine Promotion. Our club has raised over $200,000 in the last 16 years. I have coordinated 12 of these Rally years and love doing it.

Take a look at my daughter and my twin granddaughters and you will see the best reason of all to support Rally for the Cure. I pray that they will not have to go through this.”
